Rednecks + Culchies
2013 Documentary, 71 Minutes
Irish tradesmen, Anthony Monaghan and John McNamara take a hard look at the drug and alcohol addictions of the American working class. One of eleven children, Monaghan is no stranger to poverty. With only five years of formal education, he left home in Western Ireland to seek work abroad. He went from picking potatoes in England to founding Irish Construction, a successful masonry company in St. Louis. Having overcome the most difficult of obstacles, he is baffled by the apathy and relentless substance abuse problems of American workers.
Following a high profile premiere at the Hi-Pointe Theatre in 2013 and a screening in the 2014 St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, Rednecks + Culchies gained international distribution. In 2016, Monaghan hosted a special screening of Rednecks + Culchies at the Tivoli Theatre with all proceeds benefiting The S.H.E.R.A.H. Movement, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources for disadvantaged women of the St. Louis community.
